From Caregiver to Cultivator: The Inspiring Story of a Grandmother’s Backyard Transformation

When Remah first heard about the OA Organik project, she was happily tucked away in the quiet rhythm of her later years—immersed in the joy of nurturing her grandchildren and savouring life on the periphery. Starting an organic farm at home wasn’t on her radar. How could it be? She had doubts. Was she strong enough? Skilled enough? Could she really take on something new at her age?

But in 2024, Remah took her first brave step into organic farming. What started with hesitation soon flourished into a quiet revolution in her backyard. With limited land, minimal resources, and a heart full of love for her family, she discovered a model that didn’t demand her to choose between duty and livelihood—it invited her to blend both.

“Cili padi, anyone?”

Flexibility that Fits a Life of Care
The OA Organik model turned out to be perfectly tailored for women like Remah—those who juggle caregiving, household responsibilities, and community presence. It offered autonomy over time and work pace. No rigid hours. No demands she couldn’t meet. Just opportunity.

And she seized it.

In May, just a few months into the project, Remah made a bold decision: to expand her backyard farm. By August, she was harvesting income—not just organic vegetables, earned on less than 1/16th of an acre. A figure that may seem modest, but for Remah, it meant her income had doubled to more than RM1000 a month. That’s not just growth— it’s transformation.

Remah’s story is more than just agriculture—it’s a powerful testimony of resilience, empowerment, and a grandmother’s enduring love.
