From City Kitchens to Village Fields: An Orang Asli Journey of Purpose, Growth and Community

Sharil, a quiet and helpful young man from Ganuh village, never imagined his life would take such a transformative turn. Once a kitchen staff in the bustling city, earning twice what he does now, Sharil chose a different path—one rooted in purpose, community, and sustainability.

Back to the Roots Within

His journey began when his cousin Zamri, a full-time ground staff with OA Organik, introduced him to the project. Though he had no farming experience, Sharil was drawn to the mission. He started by supporting new farmers transitioning into OA Organik’s regenerative model, offering encouragement and hands-on help. Over time, he picked up farming himself—not for profit, but to deepen his connection with the land and his people.

Sharil’s commitment to community upliftment stood out. Even as he began farming, he prioritized mentoring others over personal gain. His selfless dedication led OA Organik to onboard him as a full-time ground staff, a role he embraces with humility and pride. He still farms occasionally, but his heart lies in empowering others.

A Journey of Purposeful Growth

Since returning to Ganuh, Sharil has undergone a profound mindset shift. His days are more meaningful, his bond with family has strengthened, and he now values knowledge, experience, and community transformation above monetary rewards.

Sharil is currently part of the Youth Environment Living Labs (YELL), a prestigious six months program supported by UNDP Malaysia, Singapore & Brunei Darussalam, UNICEF Malaysia, ALAM, the EU, and OSK Foundation. Through YELL, he’s amplifying sustainability efforts and inspiring other rural youths to take environmental action.
