Community Power: OA Farmers Restores Roof and Reinstall Solar Panels

At 8:30 in the morning, the OA Organik Processing Centre (PC) stirred to life with birdsong, gibbon calls, and the cheerful laughter of farmers sharing breakfast. This easygoing ‘santai’ moment belied the challenge that lay ahead: replacing the PC’s leaking roof—complicated by the solar panels installed on it. This PC is the main collection hub of OA Organik’s indigenous farming enterprise.

Why the Processing Centre Matters

The PC is more than just a building. It’s the centre where farmers sort, pack, and prepare their freshly harvested produce before sending it out to market. A leaking roof threatened not only the structure but also the smooth flow of work that sustains the OA Organik community.

The Solar Panel Challenge

Replacing the roof wasn’t straightforward. Since 2021, the PC has been powered by solar energy — 12 heavy panels weighing nearly 20kg each. Removing and reinstalling them safely required skills few farmers had. Recognizing this, the village’s farm committee where the PC is situated called for a Gotong‑Royong (community workday). They invited all the villages involved in this enterprise to lend a hand and engaged trainer, Arok, who shared practical knowledge on solar systems and guided the farmers step by step.

Hands-On Learning & Teamwork

Twelve farmers from three villages joined forces. Under Arok’s guidance, they carefully removed the solar panels, cleaned them, and prepared the roof for replacement. By afternoon, the new industrial metal roof was installed — a testament to the farmers’ natural craftsmanship and teamwork.

As the sun set, squeaky‑clean solar panels were lifted back into place. With every wire checked and every attachment secured, the farmers exchanged smiles of relief and pride. The PC was restored, stronger than before, and powered up for the future.

 Community Enterprise in Action

This Gotong‑Royong wasn’t just about fixing a roof. It was about empowerment, skill‑building, and the spirit of collaboration.

OA Organik farmers showed what community enterprise truly means: identifying challenges, sharing knowledge, and working together for the benefit of all.

OA volunteers from 3 villages came together to repair their Processing Centre. This is empowerment beyond one village- it is now a multi-village enterprise where the whole network of villages are working together as one. That is what sustainability looks like.
